How to Train a Labradoodle Puppy at Home

Training a Labradoodle puppy at home comes down to consistency, early routines, and positive reinforcement. And fortunately, they are highly intelligent and eager to please, which makes them one of the easier breeds to train when you start early.

That said, Labradoodles can pick up bad habits just as quickly when routines and boundaries are inconsistent. Once behaviours like jumping, barking, or toilet accidents start feeling normal, they become much harder to break later on. That’s why early training and consistency should be a priority.

At Oodle Pups, raising Pip and Rosie showed us how much simple daily routines influence a puppy’s behaviour early on. This guide is based on methods and routines that work in everyday home life.

We break down how to toilet train your Labradoodle puppy, teach basic commands, and manage chewing and nipping. You’ll also learn how to encourage calm, well-mannered behaviour from the start without relying on harsh correction methods.

But before we get into the process, let’s look at why Labradoodles are not always as easy to train as people expect.

Labradoodle Training: Why It’s Not Always as Easy as You’d Think

Labradoodles are highly trainable but can become easily distracted without firm routines. This comes from the mix of traits they inherit from both parent breeds. Labrador Retrievers are naturally people-focused and eager to please, while Poodles tend to be more independent and sensitive to their environment.

Because these traits vary between individual dogs, two Labradoodles from the same litter can respond to training in completely different ways. For example, a puppy that learns “sit” in two sessions can just as easily learn that jumping gets attention in one.

That’s why training approaches need to be adjusted per dog rather than treated as a fixed formula.

What to Prepare Before Training Your Labradoodle Puppy

Before starting formal training, it helps to create an environment that encourages consistency and reduces confusion for your puppy. Labradoodles learn best when routines are predictable, and expectations are clear from the beginning.

To support this, you’ll need a few essentials:

    • Training Treats: High-value treats are the fastest way to get a young pup’s attention and reward the behaviour you want to see more of. Small, soft pieces are ideal since they’re quick to eat and won’t slow the session down.
    • Lead and Harness: Puppies are much easier to guide when they feel comfortable and secure on walks. Starting with a well-fitted harness and standard training lead gives you better control without putting pressure on your puppy’s neck.
    • Toys: Young puppies lose focus quickly when training becomes repetitive. A favourite toy between commands helps keep them engaged and motivated.
    • Quiet Space: Sounds, movement, and smells easily pull a pup’s attention away. A quiet, low-distraction area at home gives your dog the best chance to stay focused and learn what you’re teaching.
    • Short, Regular Training Sessions: Keeping sessions to three to five minutes, repeated a few times a day, works better than one long session.

Worth Noting: Crate time between sessions gives your pup a chance to rest and process, which makes the next session more productive.

The Most Important Skills to Teach Your Labradoodle Puppy First

The four skills that influence your Labradoodle’s behaviour long-term include: toilet training, basic commands, recall, and lead walking. Let’s break them down.

    Toilet Training and House Rules

Toilet training is one of the first things to work on when your puppy comes home. Most puppies under 8 weeks have little control over when they need to go. So at this stage, the focus should be on teaching your pup to recognise that feeling before they act on it.

It’s also the stage where house rules should become clear. If jumping on furniture, biting hands, or begging at the table is not allowed later, it should not be encouraged during puppyhood either.

    Basic Commands and Recall

Simple commands such as sit, stay, come, and leave it create the foundation for everyday behaviour. Labradoodles usually respond well to praise and food rewards, especially when sessions stay short and engaging.

Recall training is particularly important because many Labradoodles become easily distracted outdoors. Practising recall regularly in quiet environments before moving into busier areas helps build reliability over time.

Lead Walking and Good Behaviour Outside

Labradoodles are strong dogs, and without early lead training, pulling becomes a hard habit to break. The simplest way to start lead walking is:

    • Let your pup get comfortable wearing the harness before attaching the lead
    • Start indoors or in the backyard, where distractions are low
    • Reward calm, loose-lead walking with a treat, and keep sessions short
    • Once walking is reliable at home, gradually move to busier environments

The goal is to make lead walking feel normal and rewarding early on, before size and strength make it harder to manage.

How to Train Your Labradoodle Beyond the Home

Many Labradoodle puppies behave very differently once they leave the house. A puppy that listens perfectly indoors may suddenly ignore commands around new smells, people, or unfamiliar sounds. This is completely normal and part of the training process.

We recommend introducing new environments gradually rather than expecting perfect behaviour straight away. Start with quieter spots like a friend’s backyard or a quiet street, then slowly increase the level of distraction over time. Car rides are worth introducing early, too, since a dog that is comfortable travelling is far easier to manage day to day.

Socialisation plays an equally important role. The RSPCA recommends positive reinforcement across all stages of dog training, including exposure to other dogs, people, and new environments. When that’s done consistently, the good behaviour your Labradoodle practises at home starts to carry over outside as well.

Common Labradoodle Behaviour Problems (and How to Manage Them)

Even well-trained Labradoodles can develop behavioural challenges during puppyhood, especially while teething or adjusting to new routines. However, most issues are manageable when addressed early and consistently. These are the most common ones and how to handle them:

    • Jumping Up: Labradoodles love greeting people, which makes jumping one of the most common behavioural issues. To address it, ignore the jump, wait for four paws on the ground, then reward with a treat and calm praise.
    • Barking: If your dog is barking, it usually means they need more exercise and mental stimulation. This is often caused by excitement or under-stimulation, so identifying the cause helps you respond in the right way.
    • Mouthing and Nipping: These behaviours are common in younger puppies and are usually part of play rather than aggression. When it happens, redirect your puppy to a toy and avoid reinforcing the behaviour with attention.
    • Selective Hearing: Practising commands in gradually more distracting environments helps build reliability. When a Labradoodle ignores a command, it’s often because something nearby is simply more interesting. That’s why you should reward every correct response and build up distraction levels slowly.

In many cases, these behaviours come from overstimulation, inconsistent boundaries, or lack of mental enrichment rather than stubbornness. Early structure and proper socialisation can prevent many of these issues from developing in the first place.

Choosing a breeder accredited through the Australian Labradoodle Association of Australia (ALAA) can also reduce the risk of inherited behavioural problems.

Start Training Early and Make Every Day Count

Training a Labradoodle doesn’t have to be perfect. Most dog owners start with a few gaps in their routine, and that’s fine. What counts is staying consistent, keeping sessions positive, and adjusting when something isn’t working rather than giving up on it.

The habits your Labradoodle develops in the first few months are often the ones that last. A puppy that learns calm behaviour, boundaries, and good manners early is usually much easier to live with as an adult dog.

That process starts with choosing the right puppy. At Oodle Pups, we breed Australian Labradoodles with temperament and trainability in mind, so you’re set up well before training even begins.
